WINNIPEG—February 21, 2017. Former Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) Company dancers, Catherine Rutherford and Serena Sanford, return to the Centennial Concert Hall stage for Alberta Ballet’s Love Lies Bleeding, presented by the RWB. This multimedia pop ballet, set to 14 Sir Elton John and Bernie Taupin hits, runs from March 1-5 and features the familiar faces of RWB alumni.

Both Sanford and Rutherford are graduates of the RWB School Professional Division and look forward to seeing old teachers, RWB Company dancers, and friends during their time in Winnipeg. For Rutherford, she will have the opportunity to once again perform for her family in her hometown.

“Love Lies Bleeding is unlike anything audiences have ever seen,” says Rutherford. “Audiences go crazy when they see it—Love Lies Bleeding is a stand-alone piece!”

Sanford, whose favourite role at the RWB was Nancy in Val Caniparoli’s A Cinderella Story, has new shoes to fill, high heeled boots, in fact. Sanford, who dances the role of an inner demon in Love Lies Bleeding, dons eye-catching heels, a variety of unitards, short wigs, and hats. Sanford, who danced for nine seasons with the RWB Company, will perform for the last time in Winnipeg, as she is retiring at the end of this season.

How do Rutherford and Sanford describe Love Lies Bleeding? Rutherford uses the words seductive, explosive, and empowering, while Sanford describes Love Lies Bleeding as a spectacle, passionate, and electric.
