Job Title: Professional Ballet Teacher
Department: School Artistic
Reports to: School Director
Salary Range: $30,000-$50,000, plus Medical Benefits, Dental Benefits, Life Insurance Benefits, Group Insurance Benefits, RRSP Benefits, Vision Care Benefits.
Term: Full-time based on a 40 hour work week

Founded in 1970 by celebrated teacher and former Royal Winnipeg Ballet Principal Dancer David Moroni, C.M., Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet School Professional Division is internationally recognized as a centre for dance excellence. Under the direction of Arlene Minkhorst, the RWB School’s mandate is to provide the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Company (Artistic Director André Lewis), and companies around the world, with the best-trained dancers and dance teachers, who have the flexibility to perform and teach a wide variety of dance styles, are well rounded and healthy individuals, and are capable of enjoying long and fulfilling careers.

Summary Statement:

The Professional Ballet Teacher is responsible for the consistent instruction of ballet classes and choreography as assigned by the School Director. The Professional Ballet Teacher has a strong background in the Russian system of training for classical ballet and is able to teach several levels and age groups.

The successful candidate will thrive within a close group of experienced, hard-working and caring staff of teachers and administrators and will complement the supportive atmosphere at the RWB School. The teacher will be familiar with and will conduct themselves according to the RWB School Business Plan.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Artistic Obligations
  • Teach ballet classes and rehearse ballet choreography
  • Audition students on tour and in Winnipeg
  • Grade and evaluate students in class and during exams
  • Cast students in appropriate works for performances
  • Work with the School artistic and production teams to prepare students for performances
  • Teach classes with utmost professionalism
Administrative Obligations
  • Attend all meetings of the School scheduled by the Principal or program directors
  • Prepare report cards, student assessment forms and letters of reference as required
  • Ensure that appropriate, positive and fair evaluations are given to students on their report cards
  • Participate and contribute to short-term and long-range planning sessions
  • Other duties as assigned by the School Director
Communication and Relationships
  • Maintain open and honest communication with the School Director
  • Build and maintain positive and productive relationships with parents, students, artistic staff, administrative staff and musical staff
  • Forward any and all concerns directly to the School Director
  • Ensure that administrative deadlines are met
  • Maximize communication opportunities with parents
  • Maximize communication opportunities with colleagues in the teaching staff to ensure consistency with respect to the material being taught

Education and Qualifications:

  • Five (5) years or more experience as a Professional ballet Teacher, or as a Professional Dancer
  • Familiarity with the Russian system of training for classical ballet from an internationally recognized school or company
  • Knowledge of repertoire from the classical ballets, including an ability to choreograph dances
  • Experience dancing lead roles in classical repertoire an asset
  • Criminal Background Check and Child Abuse Registry Check
  • Able to legally work in Canada
  • Able to travel internationally
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate students
