Manitoba Lotteries presented RWB's Ballet in the Park at Assiniboine Park's Lyric Theatre from July 28th to 30th with free performances starting at 7:30 pm nightly. A beloved tradition since the late 70s, this weekend's warm weather attracted thousands of people to the 2010 Ballet in the Park to watch performances by the RWB School and Company.

This year's event featured a diverse program of contemporary and classical works. The evening began with Quantz by Quanz, choreographed by renowned Canadian choreographer Peter Quanz and performed by RWB Company dancers. Following this, the audience witnessed an electrifying array of performances by both the RWB School Recreational Division and the RWB School Professional Division, including an excerpt from the classical ballet comedy Coppélia as well as a showcase of works crafted by the winners of the annual First Steps choreographic competition.

Other activities included free giveaways, draw prizes, complimentary pre-show creative movement classes and much more. Each night, a select celebrity guest was paired with a dancer during intermission and will attempted to perform a series of challenging ballet moves on stage.  Provincial Liberal Party Leader Dr. Jon Gerrard, Chair of the RWB Board of Directors
and Manitoba Marathon Champion Mike Booth rose to the challenge like true professionals.

Ballet in the Park was made possible by the generous support of Presenting Sponsor Manitoba Lotteries. Canada's Royal Winnipeg Ballet also acknowledges the support of Canadian Heritage, Canada Council for the Arts, the Manitoba Arts Council and the Winnipeg Arts Council.

"The long running Ballet in the Park outdoor event serves as a testament to the Royal Winnipeg Ballet's involvement in the community,” says Manitoba Lotteries President and CEO Winston Hodgins.  As the presenting sponsor once again, we are very proud to support this summer tradition of uplifting performances put forward by the RWB.  This is a perfect way for all audiences to enjoy the fresh air and experience the ballet in a very unique setting.”
