La Bayadère to be final classical ballet performance for RWB principal dancer.

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s (RWB) Principal Dancer Dmitri Dovgoselets has announced he will retire in 2020.

Dovgoselets has performed an extensive repertoire with the RWB, including Albrecht in Giselle, Romeo in Rudi van Dantzig’s Romeo & Juliet and the roles of Prince Désiré and Bluebird in The Sleeping Beauty. Recently, Dmitri partnered Evelyn Hart in the world premiere of James Kudelka’s Vespers.

Dovgoselets shared, “After 22 seasons it is with mixed emotions that I am announcing my retirement as Principal Dancer with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. It has been my greatest joy to have danced with the RWB here in Winnipeg and on stages around the world, but now the time has come to look forward to a new chapter in my life. It has truly been a privilege to share the stage with my fellow artists throughout my career. I will be forever grateful to Artistic Director, Andre Lewis and the entire team at the RWB for all of their support in making this incredible experience possible.”

Born in Kyiv, Ukraine, Dmitri trained at The National Ballet School of Ukraine in Kyiv. Following graduation, he joined The National Ballet of Ukraine where he danced for two seasons. Dmitri toured Canada with The National Ballet of Ukraine and Shumka Ukrainian Dancers before joining the Royal Winnipeg Ballet as an Apprentice in 1998. He was promoted to Soloist in 2005 and Principal Dancer in 2015.

“In the coming months, we will have many opportunities to recognize Dmitri’s achievements and thank him for gracing our stage,” says André Lewis, RWB’s artistic director and chief executive officer. “We plan to have a special celebration of Dmitri’s contribution during our performances of Moulin Rouge.”

Dovgoselets will play the lead role of Prince Solor in La Bayadère, his final classical ballet performances with the RWB on Thursday, October 3 and Saturday, October 5, the Nutcracker in December, and Moulin Rouge February 27 to March 1.

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet gratefully acknowledges the ongoing support of its Funders Canada Council for the Arts, Manitoba Arts Council, Winnipeg Arts Council, and Manitoba Sport, Culture, and Heritage as well as the generous support of patrons, sponsors and donors.
