NOVEMBER 2014 COMPANY SPOTLIGHT
Holiday Gift Guide
Christmas is coming up fast, and with the malls already busy with holiday shoppers the countdown is on to get that perfect gift. The RWB has something special for the ballet lover on your list, and you’ll find it on our 2014 Holiday Gift Guide.
New Nutcracker Bears in Town!
The RWB is thrilled to announce the addition of new characters to the beloved holiday classic, Nutcracker. 13 new furry characters – 12 baby polar bears and one adult polar bear – will join the cast of characters in what has become a holiday tradition for so many. RWB launched Nutcracker with the announcement of the new characters during a media event on Nov. 4, where RWB’s Nutcracker bear, Filbert helped unveil one of the adorable baby polar bears and shared the excitement of getting a new friend in the adult polar bear. The 12 baby polar bears will be played by 12 students from the RWB School Recreational Division. With costume design by Paul Daigle, the polar bears will add additional choreography in a new scene.
We are excited to introduce our new furry friends to the stage,” said RWB Artistic Director, André Lewis. We hope our new bears find a place in our audiences hearts.”
Sponsor a Furry Friend!
You can help in the creation of one of the soon-to-be iconic polar bear characters with the Filbert’s Furry Friends Campaign. We invite you to join the campaign and help bring a polar bear to life with a donation starting at $20. Donations of $250 or more (by December 15) will receive an invitation to a Cupcake Holiday Party hosted by Filbert and a few of his furry Nutcracker friends. Donate $2,000 or more and you or your child’s name will be sewn into the costume so that RWB School’s Recreational Division dancers and future polar bear cubs will enjoy and appreciate your generous gift for many years to come! To donate, or for more information, please visit rwb.org.
Welcome guest artist, Maksim Chukaryov
The RWB would like to extend a warm welcome to guest dancer, Maksim Chukaryov, who will be joining the RWB Company for its performances of Nutcracker and Swan Lake. Chukaryov hails from the Estonian National Ballet, of which he joined upon completing his training at the Tallinn Ballet School (Estonia) in 2007. He has danced a number of leading roles including Prince Siegfried in Swan Lake, Romeo in Romeo and Juliet, and Basilio in Don Quixote. RWB SCHOOL SPOTLIGHT
RWB School Recreational Division Holiday Roundup
The holidays are almost upon us and we’re feeling the spirit of the season here at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. The RWB School Recreational Division is excited to be a part of a number of community events surrounding the holidays and leading up the RWB’s production of Nutcracker!
On Friday, November 14, students Rachael Buchwald and Ronan Sheikh dressed up in their Nutcracker best and attended the Children’s Museum’s November Membership Night alongside Filbert the Bear, the Nutcracker mascot. The dancers and Filbert met Children’s Museum members and their guests.
Students Kaily Price and Luke Boguski will be dressing up in their Nutcracker wear and heading to the Festival of Trees and Lights Family Day on Saturday, November 22 in the Manitoba Hydro building. The dancers and Filbert will join Santa and Mrs. Claus in greeting families and sharing hot cocoa and cookies. This event is open to the public and runs from 10am to 2pm.
The Winnipeg Art Gallery’s holiday party takes place on Sunday, December 7 from 1:30 to 4pm. The free event, open to the public, will feature special holiday music, games, hot cocoa and cookies. RWB School Recreational Division students Rachel Buchwald and Ronan Sheikh will join the WAG elves and Santa in trimming the WAG’s holiday tree!
Students Meghan Carnegie and Luke Boguski, along with Filbert, will attend Assiniboine Park Conservancy’s Brunch with Santa at the Qualico Family Centre on Sunday December 14. The event, which runs from 11am to 1pm, is open to the public, however if you wish to attend reservations are recommended as it fills up quickly! Visit assiniboinepark.ca for more information.
Everyone’s favourite holiday classic, Nutcracker, runs December. 20 to 28 at the Centennial Concert Hall. The RWB School will have more than 50 Recreational Division students performing alongside the RWB Company and Professional Division students for what has become a holiday tradition for so many. This year’s Nutcracker has an exciting new addition! Thirteen polar bears – one big and twelve babies – will be added to the Nutcracker cast of characters.
The RWB School will be holding a food drive for Winnipeg Harvest, running November 15 to December 15. RWB School Recreational Division students and families are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items to the Harvest Bin. Upon donating, please show your item to the School Office Staff before placing it in the bin and you will be given a ballot to enter to win a pair of tickets to Nutcracker. Help us fill the bin!
“The holiday season is a perfect time to celebrate one’s good fortune and to give back to the community,” said Kelly Bale, Principal of the Recreational Division. “It’s a delight that our Recreational Division students and families are eager to make a difference in the lives of so many by donating food to the Winnipeg Harvest and by sharing their love for dance through the many celebratory events leading up to Nutcracker.”
