RWB`s Women`s Committee is a finalist in this year`s 18th Annual Manitoba Tourism Awards volunteer category!

RWB’s Women’s Committee formed in 1947 to raise funds and promote the ballet. The committee’s volunteer efforts range from sidewalk sales to running a consignment shop called Things Antiques and Gifts. Through the proceeds of its fundraising efforts, Women’s Committee makes an annual donation in the neighbourhood of $20,000 to the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Many of the Women’s Committee members are former ballet dancers and have volunteered for more than 30, 40 and 50 years. Things Antiques and Gifts is the longest running continuous fundraiser for the Arts in Canada and continues to operate 8 hours a day, 6 days a week.

Today this dedicated volunteer committee also includes men and its members serve an average of 13,000 hours per year. When the RWB performs, the committee packs up their shop from 913 Corydon Avenue and sets up a merchandise table in the foyer of the Centennial Concert Hall. Customers who visit the Things Shop find that the Things shop is filled with many whimsical things – from antique jewellery, china, silverware, furniture and of course other memorabilia. Patrons not only find treasures and other one of a kind items, they help support the future of dance. The Women’s Committee are truly ambassadors of the Arts community as they regularly attend RWB’s performances and greet patrons. Their passion, years of dedication and desire to enrichen the community is unwavering and incredibly inspiring.

RWB’s Women’s Committee’s legacy continues to inspire members, both current and new. Members stay in touch by attending regular meetings and brainstorming new ways in which to support the continued growth of dance in our city. As the Women’s Committee grows, new members have joined from every walk of walk of life. No dance experience is needed, just the passion and drive to support the future of dance for those on stage as well as in the audience. The Royal Winnipeg Ballet is truly in awe of the Women’s Committee’s genuine and humble desire to support Winnipeg’s arts community for generations to come.
