HIGH VOLTAGE PERFORMANCE OF CELTS IS COMING TO WINNIPEG!
Choreographed in 1995, the year before the Riverdance phenomenon hit North America, Lila York’s Celts is an exuberant fusion of ballet, modern, classical, and Irish folk dance set to the music of pulse pounding and foot stomping rhythms of Celtic music. It officially premiered in March 1996 with the Boston Ballet , “ensnaring the audience and lifting it to its feet with torrents of applause,” (“Learning to Lovett”: Boston Ballet’s “Hot and Cool,” April 4, 1996). The Royal Winnipeg Ballet is thrilled to present the Winnipeg premiere of Celts as part of the upcoming Mixed Programme shows on January 27-28, 2017 at the Pantages Playhouse Theatre.
New York-based choreographer Lila York had a 12-yeer dancing career with the world renowned Paul Taylor Dance Company and appeared in more than 60 works. Over the years, York has created works for the Royal Danish Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Kansas City Ballet, American Repertory Ballet, The Juilliard Dance Ensemble and more. She also choreographed the critically-aclaimed The Handmaid’s Tale - the thrillingly theatrical ballet -– highlighting dark romanticism, emotional truth, and forbidden desires – was specially commissioned by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.
Celts’ inspired choreography is based on various Irish folk tales and showcases ensemble pieces and energetic solos along with pulses of Irish war drums and costumes in rich passionate colours. York shared, “It celebrates the resilience of the Irish. Their fortitude and stamina… ” (Irish Voice). The ballet springs to life with a pastiche score by The Chieftains, Mason Daring, William J. Ruyle, Bill Whelan and Celtic Thunder.
