Arnold Spohr

Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet would like to commemorate the passing one year ago of Arnold Spohr, RWB’s Artistic Director Emeritus. Mr. Spohr spent most of his life at the RWB as a dancer, choreographer and finally Artistic Director for thirty years. His extraordinary presence at the ballet is deeply missed.

“Mr. Spohr spent most of his life working for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. He was absolutely instrumental in bringing the Company to international prominence, and he put his heart and soul into realizing that vision. We at the RWB are humbled and proud to carry on his legacy.” – RWB Artistic Director, Andre Lewis.

In any given 90 hour period, the 100 students of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School Professional Division maintain a rigorous schedule as they strive to become the next generation of dance artists.

The young dancers, along with the RWB School faculty and support staff, will have cumulatively participated in 96 hours of dance classes with another 45 hours of repertoire rehearsal within that time period. The RWB physiotherapy team will have spent 12 hours keeping the young dancers fit and able to meet the demands of their training. Over 40 hours of designing, cutting and sewing of costumes will have been done by the RWB wardrobe team, along with at least three hours of costume/shoe fittings and another nine hours of building props and scenery by the production team, all in preparation of our 40th anniversary show coming up in May. Additionally, each student will have personally partaken of nine nutritious meals (and snacks!) prepared by our residence chefs, spent 12 hours in academic classes, another four and a half hours in study hall and at least five hours worth of calling home to their families all over the world. And, hopefully, they will have also got some well-deserved sleep somewhere along the way!

Arlene MinkhorstCanada's Royal Winnipeg Ballet congratulates RWB School Director Arlene Minkhorst on her recent YMCA-YWCA Women of Distinction Award nomination.

"Over the past three decades of her career as an arts educator, directly through her own teaching which she continues to actively engage in on a daily basis, as well as through her guidance in various leadership roles, Arlene Minkhorst has created opportunities for thousands of Manitobans to enjoy the many benefits of dance. Some of those whose lives she has touched have even gone on to enjoy careers performing on stages around the world or choreographing for major international ballet companies.  Regardless of the eventual acclaim of her students, Arlene works tirelessly to ensure that quality dance training is accessible to as many people as possible while at the same time insisting that every student is entitled to the highest calibers of training in the pursuit of their own dreams."

The YMCA-YWCA Women of Distinction Awards Program is an inspirational and exciting celebration of talent, achievement, imagination and innovation, honouring Manitoba women who have made a unique and exemplary contribution to the development of others in our community. The 35th Annual Women of Distinction Awards ceremony will be held on May 4, 2011 at the Winnipeg Convention Centre.
