RWB Mourns the Loss of Eva von Gencsy

Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet today mourns the loss of Eva von Gencsy (89), the Hungarian-born ballerina affectionately called the “Queen of Dance” who contributed to the early years of the RWB, cofounded Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal, and who earned an international reputation as a dance teacher.

“I will never forget taking her class,” said Johanne Gingras, Director of the RWB Teacher Training Program, who took Jazz from von Gencsy during her early training in Quebec. “As a teacher she was enthusiastic, warm and passionate,”

Von Gencsy is an important part of RWB’s history. She performed with the fledgling Winnipeg Ballet (later Royal Winnipeg Ballet) for five years, attracting new audiences to ballet with her interpretations of classical and modern roles.
